Police Courtesy in Law Enforcement

Police Courtesy in Law EnforcementPolice Courtesy in Law EnforcementIn law enforcement circles across the United States, a quiet debate continues to take place about the brotherhood of the thin blue line and professional courtesy among police officers. At the heart of the discussion is the question of whether police officers should receive leniency if they commit traffic violations and even some misdemeanors, particularly in light of the tough job they have and the importance of sticking together. Professional Courtesy Professional courtesy is elend unique to law enforcement a certain kindred spirit certainly exists across nearly all professions. Waiters, for example, often tip fellow waiters better when dining out. Hospitality industry workers may often take care of their fellow workers by giving them free drinks or enhanced service. Historically, doctors have offered free services to fellow physicians and their family members. The fact is, people who perform the same or similar jobs have a certain appreciation and understanding of what they deal with from day to day, and they have a natural inclination toward empathy and a desire to help each other out. Considering how tough a day in the life of a police officer can be, its no small wonder that fellow officers may be inclined to look the other way when their brothers and sisters in blue commit minor violations and infractions. Higher Standards for Police Officers In law enforcement, though, the public expects their officers to be held to a high ethical voreingestellt. In order to perform their jobs and accomplish their mission of improving public safety, officers rely on the publics trust. Part of that trust entails an expectation that officers will follow the law and lead by example. Get Out of Jail Free? Most often, professional courtesy for police officers is given- or at least expected- in traffic stops. Youve no doubt seen the thin blue line stickers on the rear windows of cars in traffic. Ma ny officers and public safety professionals display the seemingly innocuous sticker as a symbol to other officers that theyre on the job, a phrase applied to those who work in law enforcement. The expectation is that other officers will be lenient because were all in it together. In most circumstances, officers are granted broad discretion in what laws they enforce and how they enforce them. Citations, arrests, notices to appearand written or verbal warnings are all on the table in most instances. Knowing that a violator is a police officer can often influence another officers decision on how to use his or her discretion. Leniency for Cops - Right or Wrong? But is it right? Should police officers receive special consideration? Or should they be expected to follow the law - all laws - just like everyone else and to receive the same consequences as everyone else? For those who fall on the side of leniency and professional courtesy, the argument is that no one else knows what offic ers face from day to day. Many say that fellow officers are going to be the ones to back you up when you need help, and so you need to keep that in mind when you have one stopped. In some cases, a ticket or an arrest may mean someones job, which makes the decision to take enforcement action that much more difficult. Officers, some say, should take care of each other.? Whos the Rat? While it may be reasonable for officers to expect some consideration, some law enforcement professionals get downright angry when they or a member of their family receives a traffic ticket or even a written warning. Officers who write tickets to other officers are sometimes called rats or worse, and there are some who strongly believe that under almost no circumstances should an officer take enforcement action against another, whether on or off duty. Accomplishing the Mission In truth, this notion flies in the face of why officers choose to work in law enforcement, to begin with. It also undermine s the trust the public has placed in the profession. The fact is, officers are expected to be exemplary in following the law so that they can have credibility when they enforce it. Failing to adhere to the law, or be held to the same or higher standard that we hold the public to, takes away from the ability of officers to effectively enforce laws and thus takes away their ability to safeguard lives and property. Real Professional Courtesy Rather than express anger at another officer for failing to provide aprofessional courtesy to another, the outrage is better directed toward the person who placed the officer in that position, to begin with. In short, regardless of your profession, if someone does not want to be accountable to the law, then the best course of action is to not break it in the first place. Police officers understand that their profession is unique and that officers need to stick together if they are to be successful and stay safe. But they also are all too aware of the consequences of breaking laws- even traffic laws. Besides the legal consequences and the inconvenience of the out-of-pocket expense of a traffic ticket, there are real-world consequences when things go wrong. Laws are in place to keep people safe from harm. When officers fail to follow them, or fail to own up to their mistakes and refuseto accept the responsibility and consequences of their own actions, they cease to be part of the solution and abflug becoming part of the problem.

How to Make a More Precise Hypodermic Needle

How to Make a More Precise Hypodermic Needle How to Make a More Precise Hypodermic Needle How to Make a More Precise Hypodermic NeedleThe hypodermic needle syringe has been a mainstay of hospital wards and examining rooms for more than 100 years. And for good reason Its simple design worksand works well.Yet, despite such elegant construction, it is leise prone to user error, especially when trying to target delicate, small bodily tissues. Jeff Karp, a biomedical engineer at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, said targeting sites like the suprachoroidal space (SCS), located between the sclera and the choroid in the back of the eye, to deliver medications via injection can be quite challenging. This tissue surrounding the SCS is about one millimeter thick, with a second tissue touching it that is even thinnerand you want to get the needle in between there, he explained. It can be hard even for people who are really good at giving shots to deliver medications to the right spot.Join A SME and Leading Industry Experts for Offshore Wind Turbine Webinar seriesThe idea of designing a precision syringe is not a new one, said Girish Chitnis, a mechanical engineer and former postdoctoral fellow in Karps lab. But most teams that have tried to come up with a design have looked to bulky electronic components to help build a better injection targeting and delivery system. The problem here is really operative, he explained. You could use some kind of imaging to help guide you or some sort of complex electronic auto-stopand they can give some indication to the operator that theyve gotten to the right placebut it doesnt really solve the actual problem.Another Fascinating Biomedical Engineering Story from ASME.org 6 Ways Engineers Heal a Broken HeartThe team used parts from standard hypodermic needles and syringes to make an intelligent-injector for tissue-targeting.Its not just about telling the clinician that they have reached the right target, said Chitnis, who now works as a senior mechanical engineer at Micro-Leads in Cambridge, Mass. You need to apply force on the needles plunger in order to deliver the medication payload to the right site. And that required force is often the very thing that leads to an overshoot. As such, the team decided to focus on the mechanical forces in order to come up with a novel solution for more precise delivery.I feel like the mechanics get ignored a lot these days because of all the smart devices. But sometimes the simple mechanics can get you to a really elegant solution that wont cost a ton to manufacture and wont get in the way of the clinical workflow, Chitnis said.Using parts from standard hypodermic needles and syringes, the team constructed what they call the intelligent-injector for tissue-targeting (i2T2). The bioengineers used forces required for insertion and payload delivery to help inform their designthe differences in pressure and resistance once a needle has entered a dense tissue.Tune In to ASME TechCast Breakthrough Could Bring New Cancer TreatmentThey created a new prototype that used two plungers, with the needle mounted on the front plunger, pressurizing the variant contents of the syringe once a user presses on the device. In a traditional syringe, because of this pressure, the fluid will start coming out of the needle tip, Chitnis said. But with i2T2, once the needle is in the tissue, the pressure actually starts pushing on the needle plunger. The differential force plus pressure helps to move the needle through the tissue. Once it reaches a cavity, however, the tip is no longer buried, the pressure eases up, the needle automatically stops, and the fluid is released. When the researchers tested the device in three animal models, targeting the SCS, as well as the epidural and peritoneal spaces, they discovered that they were able to deliver contrast agents to these difficult-to-reach spots with a high level of accuracy. Whats more, the i2T2 operators did not require any speciali zed training or practice to do so.Need a Really Strong Material? Penn Engineering Creates Super Strong Porous MetalKarp said the iT2T has the potential for multiple applications, including the delivery of epidural anesthesia to women in labor, as well as stem cell therapies to precise targets. But he said, in an age where healthcare is looking for ways to provide better patient care at a lower cost, the iT2Ts radically simple design, using commercially available needle and syringe parts, is equally important.Weve designed this in a way that makes it easy to manufacture at a large-scale, he said. By focusing on this simpler operative issue, we came up with a simple solution which will make the path forward to actually helping patients a lot simpler, too.Kayt Sukel is a science and technology writer based outside Houston, Texas.Register today for ASMEs Offshore Wind Summit to learn about the latest technologies, opportunities and supply chain strategies from leaders in the oil, gas an d wind energy industries.Read Latest Exclusive Stories from ASME.orgFive Steps from Engineer to LeadershipClimate Change Fight To Tax or Not To Tax CarbonThe Race to Patent and Cash in On Blockchain TechnologyThe simple mechanics can get you to a really elegant solution that wont cost a ton to manufacture and wont get in the way of the clinical workflow.Girish Chitnis, mechanical engineer

5 things you need to delete from your life

5 things you need to delete from your life5 things you need to delete from your lifeA few months back, an app developer friend asked me to beta test his new friend-management tool for Facebook I think you can guess where this is going. Overnight I noticed about 90 friends had vanished. By the time the weekend hit, Id unintentionally divested myself of about another 200 online friends. By the time I figured out how to safely delete the program, I welches down about 550 friends. It was weird, but who are we kidding, how many genuine friends do you really have on social media? Weirder yet was the fact that I didnt notice who was missing for quite a while. By then, I realized it was more of a relief not to have to keep track of people I didnt much care about. All this got me thinking about whats important in life, and what we should delete without looking back.Even if youre not a hoarder by nature, these are some things its time to let go of1. Does it spark misery? In her book The Life-Chan ging Magic of Tidying Up, Japanese decluttering guru Marie Kondo advises readers to rid themselves of objects that no longer spark joy in their lives. Many argue that shes taken it too far, in basically advising people to get rid of any clutter, knickknacks, or clothing to the point of being a total ascetic.Looking for an inspiring way to start your day? What about your resume that still lists that job that destroyed your career or emaille signature that has your exs last personenname instead of the one you use now?Just hit delete, take it to the trash, reset or otherwise allow yourself to elim inate the reminders of moments or people youd prefer to forget.2. Manage your messIts a little bit weird that most of us brag about how many unanswered emails we have in our inbox at any given time so, what about trying to make your inbox work for you instead of finding workarounds to that overcrowded space?Nicholas Reichenbach, Founder, and CEO of Flow Water, said that instead of worrying about what to hold onto, perhaps its better to rethink the way you use your email. The key is to use your inbox as a to do list with all current emails representing an action required by me or others. The rest of the emails are immediately filed under key business activities (such as accounting, sales, marketing, etc.) or deleted,Reichenbach said.I never go one night with my inbox not up to date and all messaging have been read, filed or deleted,Reichenbach added. He says his method is highly effective for managing 150-200 emails and never missing a beat on important and rapid communication.3. Don t be on fleekWhile there are some catchphrases and expressions that are instant classics, others can make you seem like youre trying way too hard. Just because you read it in Teen Vogue or The New Yorker, doesnt mean that the latest cool expression belongs in your updated vernacular.Pay close attention to the way your colleagues or boss react when you slip a ja genau into conversation. Are you faced with blank stares or sneers? Its time to cut back on the hipsterisms and pay closer attention to the way people at your age or stage actually speak.4. Fly guys or girlsIn a recent Women in the Workplace video on WSJ.com, a linguist tackled the issue of Creaky Phonation, AKA Vocal Fry, the style of talking in which you sort of crunch or sound creaky at the end of sentences. And while people can identify the trend in both men or womens voices, it was perceived more negatively in womens voices, especially in the workplace. Its one thing to try to affect more of a dezentral sound or dialect, quite another to take on a manner of speaking that mimics Kardashians and irritates potential employers. So, if frying is your affectation of choice, perhaps its time to let it go the way of uptalking. Away. Far, far away.5. EmojeverythingSome years back I felt extremely adored when a British colleague ended his email with his initial followed closely by an x. A bit later I realized that I probably should have been insulted that there was only one and for the few months we worked together I started counting email kisses. These days, xs and os are pretty much every day sign offs in some industries.Others consider including smileys, or other emoji to be just fine on all manner of correspondence, but before you assume that its okay to send your boss a happy face, take a moment to think about whether it diminishes your message or overall professionalism. While it might be entirely acceptable to start an email to a stranger with Hi, love if you work in beauty PR, it could come across as a form of harassment in a more buttoned-down industry.

This 1976 referral letter called Steve Jobs a joker and flakey

This 1976 referral letter called Steve Jobs a joker and flakeyThis 1976 referral letter called Steve Jobs a joker and flakeySteve Jobs may have been one of the greatest minds of our time, but he didnt come across that way when he was launching the Apple 1 computer back in the mid-70s.According to letterswritten by Mike Rose in 1976, a Silicon Valley advertising executive, after speaking with Jobs on the phone he found the project they were working on to be flaky and even called him a joker.Jobs had reached out to Rose because he needed acompany to print the instruction manual for the Apple Icomputer he had just built with Steve Wozniak.Clearly his communication skills improved over the years but at this time Rose was not impressed with what he heard on the phone. He wrote a note to his business partner with the following textBob - This joker (attached) is going to be calling you. Somebody at Regis McKenna recommended us (you). They are 2 guys - they build kits - operate out of a g arage - want our catalog sheets. Wants it for nothing. Wouldnt trust me. Told him wed like to landsee what theyve got - wed estimate - then decide.Sounds flakey. Watch itMikeLittle did he know those two guys had just built a game changing machine. The letter is now preserved in the Department of Special Collections at Stanford University. It clearly was a different time as two guys building a piece of technology in a garage today would sound like a hot startup but back then it was atypical and therefore seen as risky by much of Silicon Valley.Plus an innovative CEO and founder who isnt a fabulous communicator is the status quo with many startups these days. Clearly he needed some phone call etiquette training.Check out a copy of the original letter below.

How To Negotiate Salary

How To Negotiate Salary There are people in the world who hire lawyers to negotiate higher salaries for them, and then there are people like me who ask those lawyers to share their top tips on getting a better deal. At PowerToFly, we sat down with Nicole Page, Partner at Reavis Page Jump LLP, for a Lunch and Learn where she shared how shes raised countless salaries for her clients. Nicole has a large female clientele and was offering advice for all genders, but during the Lunch and Learn, she focused the conversation on how and why women should work on their negotiation skills. If youre a PowerToFly VIP, you can re-watch the entire talk here.1. Make A Wish List Nicole Page The first and main thing that I tell anybody whos coming to me and saying theyve got a new job offer, or theyre thinking of transitioning to a new position, is to make a wish list of everything that they want out of their next opportunity. This really helps you focus on the things that are really important to you. It also just solidifies what youre going to be asking for - it helps you get clarity.2. Rehearse And Prep For The NegotiationNP I would spend a fair amount of time preparing for the negotiation, you almost want to study for a negotiation like you would study for a test. Ask as many people in your industry what their experiences are, and just keep practicing what youre going to say. Youre going to be nervous, and probably anxious - practicing out loud can help you be as prepared as you possibly can be.3. Research Salary Ranges and Ask For MoreNP Without knowing the salary range of the position, youre negotiating in a vacuum. Knowledge is power, as they say, and I encourage people to network with other people in their industry and find out what theyre being paid. I know its not easy, but the only way to truly validate a salary range is to start asking what your colleagues and peers are making. After youve done your research and found out what the market rate is, you are going to think about the number that you want, and youre going to ask for more than that. Im not saying youre going to double that, but generally, when youre negotiating, the idea is to make some sort of compromise. You want to be able to go down a little, and let them come up - meet them in the middle. 4. Ask In Personnotlage EmailNP I think while youre in the process of negotiation, its not a bad idea to do it in conversation. Its a lot easier for someone to say no in an email, but in person, youre able to advocate for yourself and may be able to do some convincing. You also want to identify your leverage in any negotiation - that will help you decide what youre going to counter with, or if youre going to counter at all.5. Be Clear, Confident And Direct About Your AskNP Its very important to be clear, and not wishy-washy in a salary negotiation. If you want something, youve got to be very direct about it. You cannot assume that someones going to know what you mean. They wont know what you mean, and in fact, theyre disincentivized to know what you mean because the employer is essentially giving you a salary offer theyre hoping youre going to accept. They dont want to pay you more if they dont have to. Im not saying this to cast dispersions on employersthis is just geschftlicher umgang and how business works. If somebody can pay you less to do a job, they will because its more profitable for them. So, you have to be direct, and you have to be comfortable asking for a higher salary.6. Be Self-PromotingNP You must constantly remind your employer how valuable and how great you are, not just in times of negotiation. Be self-promotingyoure just undercutting yourself if youre not, and many women feel that in doing so they come across as bragging, and thats just not true. Every time you do something good, figure out a way to let your employer and your boss know. Not in an obnoxious way, but just be creative about it. Dont assume that anybodys watching or acknowledging or cares, ex cept for you. You have to look out for yourself all the time.7. Make Sure To Have Your Next Ask ReadyNP You might go into a salary negotiation and say, I want x more dollars than youve offered. And the employer might say, Well, we just cant do that. You always want to have your next ask in line. What I mean by that is that in response to the employer, you could reply, Well, if you cant give me the salary I want, then I need you to give me a better title. So, you want to have a step-by-step guide on your list and in your brain as you go into the negotiation of what youre going to say if they say no to an ask. Refer back to step one - make that list8. Remember, Its NOT A Confrontation - Its a Precedent For YourselfNP Nobody likes a confrontation, and if you go into a negotiation thinking it is, youre just going to increase your own anxiety level. A negotiation is really just a conversation youre engaging in while being protective of yourself and your needs. Studies have shown that 5% of women and 60% of men engage in salary negotiations. This means that from the very beginning of your career, you are setting a precedent for yourself and what you deserve. Setting a precedent may not always mean salary, this could be a sign-on bonus, vacation time, or even general compensation throughout your time at the company. The first offer a company gives you, most of the time, is not their best and final offer. This is your opportunity to say that you want more or you want more of something - stay calm, and set a precedent.9. If You Need Help, Find An AttorneyNP There are a few reasons why people consult an attorney to help with the negotiation process. First, negotiating is hard, and at the end of the day, some people are just really uncomfortable doing so. If youre one of those people and have the resources, it really is so much easier to have an unbiased party negotiating for you.Second, from experience, I have a lot of information about what other people in their fields are making. That kind of information is really valuable because it helps the person see if their salary is in line with the market or if theyre really being underpaid. In both cases, Im completely subterranean. Ill work out the whole negotiation strategy and the counter-offer to the employment proposal, and their employer never even knows that they ever hired an attorney. Its almost like just having a counsel and coach to help you structure it.10. Ultimately, It Might Be Uncomfortable, But Just AskNP I think it may also help everyone to know that men are asking. The men are asking for raises, and theyre getting them - theres no reason for women not to ask too. At the end of the day, if you want to get ahead, you have to put yourself out there - the only way to get what you want is to ask. Aki Merced

Job Interview Outfits for a Millennial on a Budget

Job Interview Outfits for a Millennial on a BudgetJob Interview Outfits for a Millennial on a BudgetYou only get one chance to make a first impression. Dress for the job you want. Say yes to the dress. Okay, so maybe not that last piece of mrchen advice, but when it comes to interviewing and appearance, theres plenty of anecdotal wisdom that says your looks definitely matter in scoring that big career move. If youre young and on the job hunt, however, splurging on those Louboutin heels or Armani suit may be a bit out of your starting budget. No need to worry it turns out that designer labels may not be as important in dressing to impress as you would think. Weve got the reason why, as well as plenty of other advice to help get you looking and feeling your best for that big interview.Tips for HerWhile changing cultural and corporate norms have moved us away from the days where dresses and skirts were a necessity for women at the interview table, when it comes to appearing professional , a conservative suit and blazer combo is still the go-to outfit of choice. That pink polka dot shirt bedecked with rhinestones may look amazing on the dance floor, but is entirely too flashy for a board room. Stay away from bright colors or patterns and opt instead for solid shirts or blouses with simple detailing. Bags, briefcases or purses should be sensible rather than designer and heels should be kept low and comfortable to best provide all day support.Personal styling wise, professional and conservative is the name of the game for makeup, hair and nails. If you opt to wear eyeshadow, lipstick or other facial accoutrements, neutral colors will accent without distracting from your qualifications and experience. Your hair should be well groomed simply styled with elaborate cuts or colors avoided. The important thing to remember for women and dressing for the interview is that your potential employer will fruchtwein likely not see or recognize designer duds versus more reasonably priced items. The traditional black suit, in pants or skirt version, is universally accepted interview attire regardless of the desired position. Keep things simple and comfortable to help build your confidence and set the stage to let your personality shine.Tips for HimMuch of the same dressing advice for women also applies when it comes to coordinating mens interview attire. Suits in conservative colors, cuts and styles will establish a neutral and professional pallet and will help set the tone for your interview. Think dark greys, blues and black for the suiting itself with neutral, solid patterned shirts worn underneath. When in doubt, nothing beats a classic white shirt. Just be sure to iron everything ahead of time or splurge on a dry cleaning bill to have everything professionally cleaned and pressed.Coordinating accessories such as shoes and ties should be equally conservative. Now isnt the time to bust out that novelty tie, no matter how laid back the geschftszimmer environ ment may seem. While some men enjoy sprucing up their wardrobe with unique sock choices, this type of trendsetting wardrobe choice is best left until after youve scored the job. Personal grooming is just as important for men as it is for women. A fresh haircut and shave shows your employer that you care about the small details exactly the type of trait most employers are looking for in their new staff members. Whenever possible, keep hair short and well styled, or pulled back neatly if you maintain a longer length. Finally, just as in womens label choices, the price or brand of your suit or outfit isnt your golden ticket to scoring the career of your dreams. Opt for well-fitting garments that are neutral and professional and rely on your intelligence and job skills to land that big role. Your attire should set the tone, not steal the show, and allow you to feel your best on the big day.
